I was curious if there's a way to show what you believe politically, that may not agree with ANY major party. It could be this site:
http://www.politicalcompass.org/
Instead of just broad labels, they try to score you on "right" vs "left" economics, and then your second dimension ranks some of the popular social issues.
If you look at their scoring of primary candidates, Hillary Clinton is a 7 out of 10 to the right side of economics. That's only a point or two behind most Republicans. It looks like they give her a 4 on social issues, but that ranks as "authoritarian," like all of the Republicans on the graph. The person who looks the most lost is Bernie Sanders (-2, 0). They're giving him credit for being on the left of economics, but then "neutral" on social issues?
It didn't take me too long to fill out the questions. I scored as (0.5, -2.1). Economically, I'm just barely on the right. That sounds accurate. Socially, I didn't know I was that low, and into "libertarian" territory. I had to read more about what that means. There's "Christian libertarianism" (notice how Christian comes first, and politics is filtered through it). That would mean, of course you wouldn't use drugs "recreationally" yourself, or want people to be using them in your home, but how can you make a bunch of laws to force that on the rest of society? What should be the punishments for those crimes, and how much does it end up costing with legal fees and sending someone to jail?
There are other hard issues like that. Should pornography be illegal? They're not asking if it's immoral, which is an obvious answer. It keeps going back to, how much do you want to spend hassling people who create pornography and disrupting a "black market" for the people who don't follow rules?
They ask if it's possible to be moral without religion. That's an easy one, also. Yes. The problem is, they seem to be minimizing "religion" to a way for people to behave better in public or private. "Religion" is supposed to be about knowing God in an accurate way (starting from the proposition that there has to be a God for the universe to make sense - not everyone has reached that point yet). From there, you're supposed to be interested in what your "neighbor" is doing, not in a "holier than thou" way, but because it frees you from always thinking about needing to be right and accomplishing your own plans if someone else has a legitimate need. I guess you could still be generous and watching our for "neighbors" regardless of which party has a majority, but it might be HARDER if more of your money is taken away, and the government acts as your substitute charity. The other strange thing is, the more you get to know God, who cares about your own tainted brand and image? You can't be more moral than God or try to compete with Him.
Just wanted to share that link for some reason. Politics are pretty complex when you can get past agreeing with EVERY position that generically describes "liberal" or "conservative." Science doesn't have to be "wrong" about temperatures going up. All I keep saying is, you can't prove it's because of human activity, and if there was some link, then politicians aren't the people responsible for solving that problem.
I guess it's just different philosophies, though. I wouldn't picture making the lottery "illegal" or trying to regulate it out of business. I picture a world where people don't want any lottery tickets. They would "logically" do the math, and figure out it's not as if they're going to win. Or, if they did, why do over half of the winners spend the entire prize within a few years? You have to know how to budget $20,000 without creating any debt before you can budget $20,000,000 and not go into debt.
