I'll try to cover topics separately:
[Versions of the Actual Software]
Back in August of 2013, a game was released, simply called "Disney INFINITY." I'm thinking it was only available on Wii, XBox 360, PS3, and Wii U.
In summer of 2014, they made a newer game, calling it "Disney INFINITY 2.0". You know what's kind of confusing? The packaging for those items talks about INFINITY 1.0, despite how none of the figures I've bought have a 1.0 on the box. You just know to look for a light white or gray color scheme, and all of the characters from the first game were from Disney or Pixar movies.
Starting from 2.0, I know they dropped support for the Wii, and I believe that's when they began supporting PS4 and Xbox One (not released until holiday 2013?).
[Disney vs Marvel]
It's actually not an either Disney or Marvel decision, but people pose questions to suggest that Spider-Man and Elsa wouldn't be able to play in the same game.
I think Disney added to the confusion, because there are TWO starter packs in software version 2.0. Each pack should have the same physical copy of the game, but you get Merida and Stitch in one pack, and the other pack has Iron Man, Black Widow, and Thor.
[Play Sets vs Toy Box]
There's a concept of play sets, starting from the first game. What that means is, a world is already designed, with specific missions to complete. You can actually just roam around the open world without missions in mind, but I haven't found much besides canisters of sparks (basically "experience points" to help you level up faster) when you take that approach.
Even after 50+ hours of game play (mostly in play sets), I'm not sure how to use the Toy Box. It's up to you what you build and how you create games. I'm even thinking the Toy Box mode might be watered down on Wii because of hardware limitations.
[What Content Each Character Can Access]
This might be the most confusing thing. The "1.0" starter pack had characters who all belong to a play set. The thing is, you can't be Jack Sparrow in "The Incredibles," or take Mr. Incredible to "Monsters University." I'm not sure why not, because that almost feels like part of the game's appeal. My best guess is that those play sets were designed for moves which Jack Sparrow can't do (such as sneaking up and scaring someone).
Every character can go to the "Toy Box," but the sad part is how four of the characters I've bought ONLY go to the Toy Box. All of them have a mini-game, which feels like unique content, but you can't play any missions designed for Rapunzel or Wreck-It Ralph.
[Forwards and Backwards Compatibility]
This can get pretty confusing. The base unit/portal, that wirelessly scans figures and other items, should be universal, but it's not. XBox systems need their own version. For the other consoles, I think the base is the same in every starter pack (even the new 3.0 edition).
Figures can go forward, but not backward. That means that the game with the biggest roster of characters is 3.0, because it already knows the full set of figures that have been released. You can't add a Jedi or a Marvel character to the 2013 game, though, or even put a Jedi in 2.0.
The "power discs," which are a separate subject, should work that way, too. I doubt 2.0 works with the first game, but 3.0 should know about every previous power disc from the first two games.
The play sets are my biggest disappointment. You'd need to own every copy of the game to access every play set. There are no Disney play sets in 2.0, and the original six play sets weren't ported over to the 2.0 game (maybe to keep it at a reasonable size?). The way you access a play set is with a special clear plastic piece that goes on the portal. Those are supposedly useful in future games, in order to buy items from the older play sets that were retained in the newer games.
[Figures Are Labeled "Not Machine Specific"]
This was probably done to save you money! I guess it makes things easier for Disney, too. Like, should they release figures that only work in the Wii version of the game? You're supposed to be able to play with characters on the Wii, and then bring them into other versions or future editions of the game in a way that preserves their stats. Like, if I got to level 15 with a figure, I'm pretty sure it comes into another game as a level 15 character.
[Anything Else?]
Those were the main things that I saw. Actually, I would add something that even eluded me for a while. The way that single figures are sold, it's hard to tell if they work with a play set, or only in the Toy Box. What I eventually noticed were icons in the top right corner of the cardboard backing. Woody had one for "Toy Story." There's also some inconsistency with how they sell double packs of figures. I was thinking that any double pack is a "play set." Actually, I've only wanted one of the figures in each play set that I've bought. Luke and Leia might eventually be an exception. For franchises that might have two characters in the game (not enough for them to make a play set, since those have 3-5 playable characters each), they'll be together in a pack, with a bonus, like two power discs that let you change the air and the ground to match their movie.
For what's supposed to be a kid's game, how has it kept me playing for more than 50 hours? I only scanned in the last two characters this afternoon. They're not as repetitive as, say, the "Toy Story" group (everyone has the same Z melee attack and throws a rubber ball for ranged attacks). I don't know if it was a glitch, but with the character who has invisibility power, if you're invisible, plus she grabs a blaster, the enemies just stand there getting shot to death (no retaliation). Once you're holding a blaster, you wouldn't be able to turn visible again with B (that fires the blaster), so I guess you need to melee to undo the effect, and you couldn't go back again.
There's just so much I want to write or report about this game! Maybe I could do it via my dormant blog, or some other way.
