Are there any risks or limitations associated with cbct scans?

CBCT technology seems extremely useful for dental diagnostics, but I’m curious about its limitations and possible risks. Since it uses radiation, how often is it considered safe to perform these scans, and are there situations where dentists prefer other imaging methods instead of cone beam tomography?

Thanks! That clears things up. How do dentists deal with the metal distortion you mentioned if a patient already has several crowns or older implants?

They use special scatter-reduction software algorithms to clean up the image, or sometimes adjust the scan angle to minimize metal artifacts.
