Thinking of building a deck behind the house

We're thinking of building a deck behind the house - we want a comfortable space for relaxing in the summer. But the lot is slightly sloped, so the design won't be the easiest. We don't want to risk hiring a random crew. Has anyone built a deck from scratch?
