How much equipment is needed for profitable mining?

In other words, how bad of an idea is it to enter mining now with just one setup? If I cannot afford large scale, is this whole thing doomed from the start?

You have to start somewhere. One mining setup is like a starting point, a gradual entry into the market and getting familiar with how everything works overall. You will not make huge money, but at least you will figure things out.

I have always believed that it is better to start with the minimum than not start at all. I agree that for a beginner, one setup is optimal. At the same time, even one setup can be profitable now under hosting conditions and with mining platforms like https://www.cuverse.com/. Infrastructure costs are shared, and you do not have to deal with the technical side of this investment project.
