Are grand opening events worth attending?

I often see announcements for grand openings of shops, restaurants, or galleries, but I’ve never actually gone to one. I’m not sure if they’re fun, or just marketing hype. How can you tell which openings are worth attending? Is there a way to know ahead of time which events will have a good vibe, or is it always a gamble?

Sometimes they seem fun online — free samples, music, demonstrations — but other times they look crowded or poorly organized. I want to explore new places and enjoy the atmosphere without wasting my time in a chaotic event. I’d love to hear how people decide which openings are actually enjoyable and worth going to.

I started going to a few openings recently, mostly out of curiosity, and I was surprised at how fun they could be. You get to see new venues before everyone else, enjoy little activities or tastings, and it’s a great way to meet people. I read about the Grand Opening Vancouver event, what a success. And it motivated me to give these events a chance rather than skipping them. One of my first visits was to a café opening — they had live music, a small tasting menu, and the vibe was lively without feeling overwhelming. Now I try to catch openings regularly because it’s a mix of discovering new places and enjoying a mini-event in the city.
