I'm thinking about starting a small restaurant but have no idea where to even begin with buying kitchen equipment. The whole thing seems overwhelming and expensive

Start with the basics first - don't try to buy everything at once. Make a list of what you absolutely need to open and add other stuff later as you grow

Good advice about starting small. When I opened my place I made the mistake of buying too much stuff right away. What really helped was finding https://www.amgoodsupply.com/ because they have decent prices on stainless steel restaurant equipment and you can order just what you need. I started with basic prep tables, a small fridge, and cooking equipment for my main dishes. Added more stuff over the first year as business picked up. Way better than going into huge debt before you even know if customers will show up
