It was my first time on the Westfield, and it’s a beautiful river. I’m kicking myself that I didn’t do the Pork Barrel section with Mike B. when he suggested it a few weeks ago. I’d say that most of the Knightville section is class II with a couple of class III rapids. There’s only one drop of any consequence – about 3’ with a couple of HUGE standing waves below it. On that drop I lucked out. I came down through the drop and the first big wave pushed me right into a big eddy on river left – just like I knew what I was doing. The rest of the river is mostly waves trains and rock gardens. (Paul wouldn’t like it – there are a couple of short quickwater sections as well.)
We didn’t do an awful lot of playing on the way down. I was paddling with the safety crew for the Westfield River Whitewater Race, and they needed to be at the Hill and Dale Rapid by the time the racers started coming through around 10:30. Believe it or not, I forgot my camera in the car, so the only pictures that I got were of the racers coming through the Hill and Dale Rapid after our paddle. Most of the racers were pretty good – not as many yahoos as I expected. A few pictures here:
