I finally broke down and started poking around Facebook and MySpace. While I can see some value to MySpace pages as a web page for people who don't have software to build web pages, or for people who do and want to be driven mad by how difficult it is to control the look of a MySpace page.... I absolutely don't get FaceBook.
Sure, you can try to find people you know there, but about half the time I can only find people on FB when I already have other contact info for them. It isn't like I have had much luck finding long lost acquaintances. And as for the way comments are posted, they all seem to be randomly extracted from some conversation being held in another room, so they don't make any narrative sense. It seems to me that message boards are still better for public discussions and email is better for private ones, so what the heck is the FB multi-stream of consciousness thing good for? It certainly doesn't promote anyone's professional image, and usually it does not help give insight into what is up with the person writing the comment. I think they need a button by each comment that says "What the heck are you talking about?"
Does anyone have the magic key to make sense of these "Networking" sites?
