2019 Anderson University's Trojan Cook-Off (Cancelled)
Posted by Brian Snavely on September 17, 2019, 7:12 pm
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is with great sadness that I must inform everybody that this year’s Anderson University’s Trojan Cook-Off has been cancelled due to only a few teams having signed-up, at this time. With the event scheduled for Friday October 18 – 19, 2019, as part of their annual Homecoming and Family Weekend, Bradley Orr doesn’t believe they will have enough teams to meet their minimum requirement to host the event.
Anderson has been one of the premier events, in the Upstate, for both cook teams and judges. At this time, they still plan to host a SCBA sanctioned event, in 2020, but on a different date.
If anybody has any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Regards, Brian

Speaking as a team who has cooked this competition since it started, I am saddened. I wish our membership could have supported these fine folks better than this. I understand many teams are going to the other big money competition. I guess the old rule of "follow the money" is true in BBQ too!

I agree with Brian, this is truly a sad day that the $4,000 in prize money that Anderson University pays out will go unclaimed. I can't believe that there weren't a few more teams who would have liked a chance at some cash to carry home. Only 4 teams signed up, I'm pretty sure that they would have gone on with 10 teams. Ten teams competing and they pay five places. Looks like pretty good odds to me. If you never have cooked this one you'll never find a more cooker friendly contest or a crowd that appreciates good Q more than the Students, Staff and Alumni of Anderson University. Give them some serious thought next year.

Ditto to Brian and Joe's comments. Anderson University puts out the red carpet for the cook teams AND the judges. My heart is so disappointed. Judi & Tony Lindsey

Re: 2019 Anderson University's Trojan Cook-Off (Cancelled)
I am sorry to see that the competition was cancelled this year. In the past, it has been one of my favorites. Since I care about this competition, I think it's fair that I provide my feedback. My reason for not going isn't because of Lake City, but because of the changes the Anderson Cook-Off organizers made.
1) No volunteers - That's fine. Not a big deal, and it's the same at most competitions.
2) Serve BBQ at remote tables - Having to carry pans of pulled pork to tables 100 yards away makes things difficult. We were at the bottom of the hill last year and there was a lot of back & forth. But, it's not a severe problem and I know to take a rolling cart for the cambro.
3) 2 members from each team must be at the table to serve guests - Here's where all the problems arise for me, due to the other 2 changes. My team is me and one other person. If we're both serving guests at a table 100 yards away from the trailer, there's no one to clean the trailer and smoker. The organizers are now monopolizing 3 hours of our time so that we can serve their guests. In the past, if there was a lull, someone could keep cleaning and packing.
These 3 changes together work against us and it's another competition where I feel the organizers are taking advantage of the cook teams. Competitions are always a lot of work, but ultimately, I'm there to have fun cooking, competing and sharing time with people.
I do understand that Anderson University had to change their layout because of the new parking lot, and they put us in the new location due to power and water supplies. However, they have chosen to make the cook teams' day much more difficult.
If the event must serve the guests away from the trailers, they should look into doing it like Rock Hill. Take the pork and let their people sell/serve it.
Also, I should say that one other team that loves this event isn't able to go simply because it conflicts with their work projects. Otherwise, I probably would have gone to help them.

This breaks my heart too. This event was the one that introduced me to the SCBA and was my inspiration for joining. Also, I am currently enrolled at AU as an adult student pursing my Bachelors, so this is a double sting.

I appreciate the feedback and will definitely discuss each of your concerns with Bradley during planning for an event in 2020. All comments are welcome at any time so we are able to work toward providing a fantastic experience at each event for cookers, judges, and hosts/organizers alike. Anderson University always goes above and beyond for everyone involved in the SCBA and they pay out a lot of prize money too. Hopefully I will see you and many other cookers out there for an awesome event next year! Thanks again, KG
