Greetings to My fellow SCBA Judges, Thank you to each of the judges who signed up to participate in Mauldin’s 9h Annual SOOIE BBQ Cook-off this next Saturday, on September 21, 2019. This is a popular cooking event. We have 30 Professional Pitmaster Cooking Teams. We always expect and receive great que at the judging tables. The SOOIE Festival location is in the heart of Mauldin.– just one (1) block from the City Hall and Police Dept on East Butler Road. Follow the smoke. If you are putting the address into your GPS, it is 101 E. Butler Rd. Mauldin, SC. The judging will be held in the Mauldin Cultural Center (formally an old school). It is an indoor, air conditioned, and comfortable judging facility. Parking is free and is available in many locations surrounding the Mauldin Cultural Center. Please follow all signs and parking attendant instructions to avoid confusion. HANDICAPPED: Accessible parking is available on site just feet away from the festival. Additional parking is available across the street at the Mauldin United Methodist church. Please take caution crossing the street. Butler Rd is a very busy road. SATURDAY MORNING 9/21/19: Judges Meeting is at 9 AM. We will be judging 3 categories. Pulled Pork, Ribs, and Brisket. I need to know if any of you will be moving to another level in the SCBA judging hierarchy: 1. If this is your 4th judging event, you will be receiving your SCBA apron and promote to Certified Judge. (I have 2 people who have reported moving up to Certified at this time) 2. If you have judged in 15 events and cooked at least one (1) time with a BBQ Cooking team, then you will move up to a Senior Judge and will receive your SCBA Senior Judge hat. (I have 2 people who will receive Sr Hats) 3. If you have judged in 30 events and cooked with at least three (3) BBQ cooking teams, you will move to the highest ranking of judges that is of a Master Judge. You will receive your SCBA Master Judge hat. IMPORTANT REMINDERS: 1. If any of you have a family member that is cooking with a team at the Mauldin event, I need to remind you that you will not be able to judge in this event. We do have other duties that you can do but you will not be able to judge in this event. Let me know if any of you fit into this category. 2. ABSOLUTELY “No talking or discussion of the tasting that is being done between the judges” until all scores have been tallied and verified. The table captain will facilitate and let everyone at their table know when the BBQ is open for discussion! 3. No fraternizing with the cookers prior to judging. After judging is completed, you are free to visit cook sites. But PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS what you tasted at the table, the appearance of sample boxes, or ask what their box numbers were. 4. What happens in Judging- room---stays in judging room! Lastly, we count on each of you to be there if you signed up for this event. We all know that our schedules change from time to time and if this happens, I kindly ask that you notify me so that we know how to prepare appropriately. I am looking forward to seeing each of you in Mauldin. Because of YOU, SCBA is a professional, successful organization, providing expert fair and consistent judging to these events! REMEMBER SOUTH CAROLINA IS THE BBQ STATE! Come expecting some good Que! SOOIE Blessings! Judi Lindsey, Marshal jlindsey29644@gmail.com 864-505-8833 Tony Lindsey, Asst. Just want to thank the folks from Mauldin for putting on a first class event. From the sites being perfect, to the shower facilities, to the marshals, and especially to the help on Friday night and Saturday. The kids who helped us make me have a little more faith that the young folks still know how to work, still have manners, and the ability to work with people. Can"t say enough good things about these kids. Thanks Mauldin! You did good.
