In early 2004 Lake High Jr. (current President of the SCBA) and Dr. Walter Rolindi were traveling home from an non-sectioned local Barbeque contest. Lake and Walter had been invited to the contest as judges and they found a couple more folks to help them. On the road home the conversation turned to the poor quality of judging they had experienced. It was obvious to the two that a lack of training was the biggest issue. Lake, who had been a certified wine judge for over 20 years suggested to Walter that they start a Barbeque Association and teach people how to judge. Over the next several weeks they met and came up with a strategy of putting such an association together. Their goals were to Maintain and promote the diversity of the four distinct styles of barbeque sauce in South Carolina, to develop a plan to help local towns and city's get contest started, and develop a method for producing well-trained, qualified judges using a fair and well-thought-out judging process. In June 2004 three judging classes were held and on June 22, 2004 the South Carolina Barbeque Association was formed. That first year over 250 judges joined the SCBA and as they say the rest is history. Today the Association has a membership of over 600 judges and sanctions over 40 events each year. The SCBA continues to add more events every year and our judges ranks continue to grow. Thanks for your tireless efforts Lake and Walter and thanks to all of the folks who have made the SCBA what it is today. HAPPY ANIVERSERY 10th ANIVERSERY South Carolina Barbeque Association.
