From everyone in the SCBA, Thanks Gene. This is your best one yet!!
In 2004, a man named Lake had a vision.
So he called some friends and made a decision.
He wanted to establish South Carolina as the best.
He decided he would put barbeque to the test.
First, he chose to write a book.
A history of barbeque and how to cook.
He wrote that South Carolina was first in the nation
And he claimed this without equivocation.
Then to bring this to even greater fruition,
He called upon his vision and intuition.
The South Carolina Barbeque Association was born.
Now it was time for Lake to blow his horn.
He spoke to many who liked to cook hog
And said we need a competition to see who is top dog.
In order to bring it about, he needed someone to decide.
So he called upon barbeque lovers to come judge with pride.
He knew integrity among judges was needed to survive.
He saw training as a way to bring judging alive.
He began with a seminar which would do just fine.
There one could learn a lot about barbeque and a little bit about wine.
Now look how this vision has grown.
Lake and his vision are nationally known.
The state recognizes our Champion as best.
There are over 30 contests to pick one to lead the rest.
Each year from hundreds who have competed,
Regardless of position, none are defeated.
They have cooked against the best
And there is always another contest.
The judges are trained and ready with haste
Over 400 strong and eager to taste.
So now we pay homage to the man who trained and led us, Lake Erie High, our founder and President Emeritus.
With respect,
Eugene E. Benfield, Jr.
