Thank you for signing up to judge Chester’s Hog on the Hill. We missed this event last year due to Covid-19 and are very glad to be back.
The team for this event includes David McLaurin as Assistant Marshal and Mike Wilson as Calculator.
Starting on Friday night there is an Anything But competition with turn in at 7 pm. If you are available and would like to help with this you are more than welcome to join us. There will be entertainment by a DJ on Friday evening.
We start Saturday with our judges meeting at 9 am promptly. Please make every effort to be on time as we have a lot to review.
If you have judged in Chester before, our judging location has changed. We are now in the Chester Farmer’s Market building at 111 Columbia St. Chester, SC 29706. There is plenty of available parking next to the building. Please bring a clip board – the tables we are judging on are wooden slats!
We currently have a strong list of 17 cooks participating, with the possibility of a few more additions before the week is over.
We will be judging 2 categories Saturday, so please come hungry! We will start with Butts at the usual time of 10:00 am, followed by Ribs at 11:00 am.
Please let me know if you will be receiving your apron or advancing to Senior or Master judge so we can have the proper supplies.
Remember, if you have a family member cooking you cannot judge, but there will be other duties you can perform. Please let me know if you fall into this category.
Prior to judging, do not fraternize with the cooks. There is no reason to walk through the cookers area prior to judging and I am asking you to please stay away from the cookers before the competition. When judging is complete, I encourage you to go out and talk to the teams. Please do not discuss that day’s judging or specific samples that were judged.
Do not bring your own zip lock bags of any size, they will be provided. Although there will not be a grazing table, we will provide bagged BBQ for those who wish to take some home. Bags will be filled by staff following guidelines for safe handling of the meat.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
Make sure your SCBA dues are paid up. You cannot judge an event if your dues are not paid up. Questions concerning membership should be directed to membership@scbarbeque.com.
Everyone who signs up to judge must provide the following:
Your own mask – recommend 2 or a face shield
Sharpened pencils – recommend 2
You may bring your own hand sanitizer or wipes but these will be available
Water will be provided but, if you wish, you may bring your own non-flavored, disposable water – no other liquids.
Crackers or bread will be provided, but you may bring your own.
Gloves will be provided where needed.
Do not discuss any aspect of judging at your table until all samples have been judged and the table captain indicates that discussion can begin.
Do not take pictures of any box!
We have 2 events this weekend, and most of our active judges are stretched between the two events. If you have signed up to judge in Chester, I need to know as soon as possible if your plans have changed. We currently have just the number of judges needed. If you don’t show up, we will be in a very precarious situation. It is imperative that you let me know before Friday if you are not going to be able to judge on Saturday.
The awards ceremony is scheduled for 2:00pm.
Again, thank you so much for signing up to judge in Chester. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in Chester at The Hog on the Hill BBQ contest!
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
