Saturday January 18, 2020 was a busy SCBA Cook Team day filled with accolades, amusement, camaraderie, prizes, fun and folly.
Jim Wellman, President of the SCBA, began the day with the SCBA Annual Awards Ceremony at the State House in Columbia where Phillip Miles and Roger Glenn Lee of Tail-Gater Hater were awarded the title, “2019 South Carolina Master Barbeque Champions in Butts and Ribs.”
Second place accolades in Butts and Ribs was awarded to Gene and Tesa Culbertson of Backwoods-Bar-B-Que. The Hog Mafia’s Josh Roberts and Morris Gray took home the 3rd Place Award for Butts, followed by Blazin’ Bullets Barbeque’s Ken Hilliard and Dawn Verbarg in 4th Place and Pimp My Pig’s Dean and Valerie Price in 5th.
Congratulations and cheers to these outstanding teams of 2019!
Later that evening the Cook Teams and Judges gathered at the Saluda Shoals River Center for the 4th Annual Cookers' Banquet where everyone was greeted with a warm welcome from our evening's hosts; Gene and Tesa Culbertson and Master of Ceremonies Gary Taylor.
Dinner was catered by Parklane Seafood and after everyone was sufficiently satisfied, it was time for some fun and games. There was singing and dancing, trivia with Janine Harcourt (who by the way has a fierce knowledge of the origins of South Carolina Barbeque) and lots of raffle prizes.
The evening's final attraction, a showdown between the cook Teams and Judges who participated in a friendly game of "SCBA Family Feud" organized by David McLaurin, and in case you were wondering, the judges dominated. Way to go Judges!!!
Thanks to everyone who donated raffle prizes and to Gene, Tesa and Gary and their committee for organizing such a special party.
