We flew out because I love to fly, as much as he loves trains. We went coach because we like to see some of the stops they make at night. We slept pretty well in the reclining seats. I didn't mind until the 2nd night, then the restrooms ran out of soap and paper towels. They got nasty and dirty. Waste baskets were overflowing in all of them.. Not sure what was wrong. They were still that way when we got off. I think it took us 3 nights, arriving home on the 4th day. (Coming back we had a twelve hour delay and they put us up in Chicago.) We missed the train for home so had to change to arrive in Kalamzoo so we had to have the guy who was picking us up in Elkhart change to Kalamazoo. (Some Amtrak stations are in seedy areas and we were advised not to leave the car there). They paid for food and the nice room in Chicago so that turned out fun.
We are thinking about taking it out again, only with a sleeper. No more coach unless it would only be one night. Live and learn!
It was the Empire Builder route that we took. It goes through part of Glacier nat. park. We loved the scenery.
