Recently, I'd heard a lot about the ACOTAR series ("A Court of Thorns and Roses" is the first book) so I picked up #1 to see if it was any good.
NOT.A.FAN.
The writing just seemed weak. Characters lacked development. Then the author threw in some gratuitous graphic sex (which wasn't well written either in my opinion).
I'd also heard about the Fourth Wing series from a lot of the same people and had picked up the first book in it at the same time. After being so unimpressed by ACOTAR, I was reluctant to even start on Fourth Wing... But I was bored Saturday night while waiting on the new Nora Roberts book to come out this week and popped it open.
OMG... It's been a LONG time since I stayed up late just to read. Fourth Wing dug its hooks in & they stayed solid all the way to the last page. Yes, there's a lot of violence. Yes, there are a lot of characters to keep track of. Yes, there are some seriously steamy sex scenes. But it's all VERY well written. You feel like you get to know the characters & you actually care about what's going to happen to them.
And did I mention that it has flying dragons & their riders??? It's like Anne McCaffrey's Pern novels made for grown ups!!!!!!
I've already ordered the next 2 in the series....
