I've always been told (by friends who are in law enforcement or lawyers) to NEVER EVER speak to the police/investigators without an attorney present because anything you say can be twisted and used against you.

Like I said, too late for this but if they come around again, just tell them you've been advised to not speak to them without legal representation. Once you say that or even simply "I want a lawyer", they cannot question you further unless you waive that request.
