We've had a heat pump (well 2 of them - the 1st one died) for approx 30 years. We've all let them switch back & forth between regular heat & "emergency heat" on their own. If it's cold enough that the regular heating can't get it up to temp, they automatically switch to emergency & then as soon as it warms up, it switches back to regular. All automatic. We don't have to do anything.
Now he's decided that if it's below 20 degrees outside, we HAVE to turn on emergency heat manually & leave it there until the forecast says it's supposed to warm up.
Every HVAC company out there says DO NOT DO THIS. I've shown him instructions from every company I can find & he insists that they're wrong & he's right... (Did I mention that running only on emergency heat costs upwards of $5/hour?)
Similarly, we have EdenPure infrared heaters here that we've used to warm up cool areas, etc. I suggested that we run one in the basement right now where it's so cold & maybe one in the living room so he'd be more comfortable. (He FREEZES even with the heat pump set to 72 degrees.) Nope. That would mess up the "balance" of heat in the house & he's not having it.I turned one on in my office this morning (tiny room with 3 big windows that gets COLD) and he threw a fit & made me turn it back off.
At the same time, he won't leave the damn deck door closed. That's where the dog door is in the attached storm door & he insists that they ahve to be able to let themselves in & out. You can feel the air coming in that door from halfway across the 20' room and IT IS FREEZING! I've argued... and close it repeatedly... but every time I walk into the living room, the damn door is standing wide open again. We let dogs in & out manually for over 20 years here, it's not that hard & it sure didn't bother the pups!!!!!
Do I need to tell you what our electric bill has been already this winter?!?!?!?! I've shown him & refuses to accept any responsibility...
And he keeps repeating the same stories over & over & over day after day after day... or else, he'll start to tell something & then walk off right in the middle of a sentence. And when I chase him down & ask what the heck he was going to say, he jumps all over ranting that he told me, by God, and he's tired of me not listening. There's no convincing him that he just stopped talking... Or I can ask him something and he doesn't even respond. Like he either didn't hear me or is ignoring me. If I ask again, he gets pissy. If I don't, it's not uncommon for him to pop up 3 hours later answering me like I'd just asked the question & then throws a fit when I tell him it's too late, insisting that I just asked him.
And we're not even going to talk about his meds... he will NOT take his pain meds as prescribed unless he's in so much agony that he can't stand it any more. Likewise with his anti nausea meds. Until he pukes, he won't take it. And he knows he gets nauseous if he doesn't eat something every two to three hours so I tried to get him to set a timer to remind him & I've stocked up every kind of snack that I can think of... and he wont' do it. I can remind him & he just ignores me... and then whines & moans because he's sick ot his stomach again...
Same for exercising. His doctor even tried to get him to take yoga classes. HE WON'T DO IT (unless he has one of his hyper days). On his hyper days, like Sunday, he's up dancing wiht Richard Simmons, shovelling the snow off the drive, and bouncing around like Tigger on Meth. But those days only happen once in a blue moon.... the rest of the time, he says he's too weak to even get up & walk into the kitchen to eat. (And then he complains about how out of shape he is on those rare manic days...) Doc prescribed yoga. I've tried to get him to ride the exercise bike (or even play games on the Wii) but he won't even try.
At this point, I'm tired of fighting him over EVERY little thing but I don't know what else to do...
