Wrapping a bag of vinegar with some water added around the tub's faucet to soak the diverter pin didn't unfreeze the diverter pin. I will have to try some CLR this afternoon. I will text my sister who lives here to remind her stop by Home Depot for a can of WD 40 on her way home. If I can't get this unstuck I'm going to have to get a plumber in. My sister who lives in Virginia knows how to repair or replace bathtub faucets but she's not able to visit for a weekend right now, it's very busy time for her. My sister who lives here is having to shower at a friend's house. With my arthritis I can't climb in and out of the bathtub anymore anyway so I'm stuck doing the sponge bath thing no matter what. It's too expensive to remodel the bathroom to replace the bathtub with a shower stall with a grab bar.
Our water is definitely more minerally than it used to be. It's probably because instead of our water coming from open reservoirs and being treated right before it comes down the pipes into our community, it's now stored in underground giant concrete boxes basically. This tub faucet is only two years old but it's the style where the diverter pin for the shower is close to the water spout, not set further back. Nothing is made well anymore. Everything needs to be replaced more often than in decades past.
