The rain started out light yesterday evening. They had tornado warnings and watches for parts of southern and central NJ into southeastern Pennsylvania. The whole area- NJ, the eastern half of Pennsylvania, the Delmarva Peninsula, parts of lower NY State into southwestern Connecticut had some sort of storm related watch. The entire state of NJ was under a flash flood watch. We got heavier rain later at night. I was awoken at 5:30 this morning by strong wind gusts slamming against the house with driving rain. I didn't need to be up that early but it took a while to fall back asleep and I wound up oversleeping. There are shower chances for this afternoon and evening.
Yesterday wound up being a crazy day. My sister's SUV had to go up to the service station for repairs so she took the Corolla for hours. While I was waiting for her to return with news her car was ready so I could drive her over to pick it up, my one niece called me. She was very upset. She's a young millennial who is legally blind and is living with her dad who is in his early 80s. This is my oldest sister's (who passed away over 20 years ago) family. My sister would have been in her early 70s now. Her husband is a dozen years older and this niece of mine is their youngest, a later in life child. They're living in one of the smaller rural communities outside Las Vegas in an economically depressed area filled with angry white rage people and they are not equipped to handle this. They're in a small subdivision of retirees and working class families with young kids. They're too timid and always downplay others bad actions. My brother-in-law grew up in a small quiet town in North Carolina where everyone knew everyone else and not much ever happened. Very little crime. His family is Moravian and they were heavily involved with the Moravian church in the Winston-Salem area. He still has relatives living there. This is where my sister was buried so we met members of their congregation back then. So my brother-in-law can be a bit naive at times. They really should either move up to the Reno area when my nephew relocated or move back to North Carolina near their relatives.
My brother-in-law and niece are basically being harassed by a juvenile delinquent preteen kid who seems to have mental health issues who brought someone questionable around to their house uninvited. Some adult man in either his 30s or 40s. The kid is home from school for the summer and gets into trouble daily while his parents are at work. My brother in law refuses to file a complaint with the police about what this kid is doing and the questionable people he's starting to associate with. The kid's father just brushes the bad behavior off as if they have no control over him. I advised my niece to try talking to his mom to let her know her preteen son is doing crazy things, trespassing on people's property, trying to steal stuff from everyone in the neighborhood, and worse is now starting to occasionally hang around with transient adult men none of them in the neighborhood know. This kid is going to get himself sexually molested by one of these men or worse. Bringing these strangers into the neighborhood is dangerous for all the residents. You never know who is violently mentally ill, a drug addict, an armed robber. My brother-in-law is such an idiot for refusing to talk to this boy's parents or get the police involved.
After my sister in Virginia got off work I called her and told her about the situation. It's just crazy. My brother-in-law has a heart condition and other health issues. My niece was born with eye issues and had several surgeries as a child to improve her vision but is still considered legally blind. Their new next door neighbor they've befriended is an older retired single woman. They're all vulnerable targets for unsavory people and they should be talking to the police.
Afterwards I had to rush to the supermarket for a couple more things and just made fast microwave meals for a late dinner.
It's a home day for me. They've scraped the four lane county road where several shopping centers are located including where the Petco is. Because of all the rain repaving overnight keeps getting delayed. My sister has the SUV and says it's very rough driving on that road with her car and recommends I avoid that road until it's repaved to avoid damaging the underside of the Corolla. So she'll have to pick up more turtle food at the Petco instead of me.
