I spent part of yesterday evening playing around with the Red Heart granny squares yarn. I'm cutting the yarn between rounds and saving the extras from each of the colors. It works up better that way using just the size I hook. It's crazy not cutting between colors and switching hook sizes to something larger during each round to use up more yarn as you get closer to the end of the round to eat up the surplus yarn. I can't imagine using a something like both a size I and a size K hook going back and forth between the two hooks as you're working each round. How does that not look off-kilter?
I hate starting each round with chain six, then three double crochet in the first corner forcing you to end the round with two double crochet back at that first corner that's then joined to the chain six. If you're not careful it looks odd at that corner. That's what you're supposed to do if you're not cutting the yarn between the colors with the granny squares yarn. But I much prefer each round to begin with chain three then two double crochet then chain then three double crochet to fully complete the first corner at the beginning. It looks a lot better that way.
This is what the yarn I'm using looks like. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Red-Heart-Granny-Square-4-Med-Acrylic-Yarn-Blk-ruby-red-250g-417yd-3Pk/9110261457
Bernat has a granny squares yarn in thicker blanket yarn and the yarn colors are loosely sewn to each other, so at the end of each round you're just snipping the thread holding each color together so you can knot off between each round. I see that yarn offered for sale online. I haven't looked at it at Michaels.
