Yesterday was my knee orthopedist appointment. Much of the appointment was spent taking x-rays. The doctor was very rushed. I only saw him for five minutes at the most. He's going to request approval for the knee gel injections from my HMO, but so far doesn't seem inclined to do more detailed imaging like ultrasound, CT scan or MRI. I haven't had an ultrasound of my knees since the fall of 2019. Meniscus problems and other issues can't be seen on x-rays.
I don't know why it's so difficult to get the doctors from this one hospital's medical group to do proper imaging. They all insist my arthritis isn't too bad because they're just looking at x-rays. He and the nurse who were typing up the medical notes were surprised when I told them I have to walk up and down stairs two feet at a time like a small child does and I am stuck doing the sponge bath thing because I can't climb in and out of the tub to take showers anymore. Unfortunately a bathroom remodel with a walk in shower stall isn't in the family budget. I don't think he noticed my cane leaning against the wall next to the chair with my purse and cardigan on it.
I spent 6 months struggling with my rheumatologist insisting my ankles were no big deal until she finally authorized the ankles MRI that showed how much damage the x-rays missed. Now I have to see what the MRIs of my feet show next month. The toe joints damage is obvious but my feet can completely stiffen up at times like they are made out of solid metal.
This new orthopedist asked if I knew which form arthritis I had, which shocked me. Isn't the knee arthritis supposed to be osteoarthritis? Can't they tell at this point? I don't even know what form of arthritis is in my ankles. I seem to have two forms of arthritis in my hands. One is OA, but the other is unknown and I'm walking around with a yet undiagnosed autoimmune disorder. It's incredibly frustrating. It's been seven months dealing with these doctors and I still don't have a lot of answers and just a growing list of questions.
Later this afternoon I have PT. I didn't get to the craft store on the weekend so I'm going to stop by afterwards since I grocery shopped yesterday after I got back to town following my doctor's appointment.
