Re: Setter strains
Funny story about Counterdrive. Uhlman was at a trial in (I think) MD. A guy ran a big running SD that had several good finds but then on his last one, knocked an chased. Really POd the guy as apparently this was a regular occurance. He then asked, "Does anybody have a live shotgun shell?" Gene said, "I don't have a shell but I do have $500.00, so Gene bought the dog which he started placing in ASDs the next weekend. Gene later told me that it was nothing to finish breaking the dog. One good whipping was all it took. Of course Gene's "good whipping" was probably harder than any that I ever gave a dog in my life.
Harry PS These days you can hardly get a good puppy for $500.00 but this was in the '60s and $500 was a doggone good price for a dog that was part outlaw - or at least one that was four years old and wasn't broke. I say "outlaw" because he'd never chase on the first find so he seemed to pretty much know what he was doing.
