Derbies were just older puppies, placed on race. Dogs weren't broke 'till the summer after their derby year. Nobody ever hurt a young dog by summer breaking after it's puppy season.
George Tracy once told me that he thought the way they ran derbies in Ohio was the best way. "But" I said, "You're fall derbies are broke!" "Right but I'd rather break them a year later, better for the dogs!" That was a long time ago but I never forgot it. Harry
