Re: Jetsetter x Johnny's Jewel
Thanks Jim. I appreciate all you have done for setters in major circuit competition. I praised Jetsetter as a producer several years ago on this board and believe he has been an influence for good on the setter breed. I keep hoping Mike Spies dog Cody will win a MC championship (obviously since I bred to him). I have told Mike that will come to pass. I have some strong bird dogs with See Johnny Run breeding and have line bred on to that with some outcrosses, hoping for a "throwback" or what some people would call a "sport". I have seen damn few of them in my lifetime, but of course I haven't been to many field trials or seen many of the top dogs. More's the pity. Getting a good bird dog out of setters is pretty easy, but getting a top all age dog is tough, as you well know, and they usually have to be allowed time to develop. That is one reason I have such respect for W. C. Kirk and Johnny Crockett, they won the Central U. S. open all age with over 50 dogs entered (in Oklahoma)l when Johnny Crockett was 3 years old, proving that some setters will take breaking early and still stay sound mentally and physically. I beat this to death, but it is worth remembering. Harold Ray was able to do it with shooting dogs by establishing a breeding program and keeping just the best. That's why he is in the HOF.
I believe that setters have been tightly bred for many many generations and that the active genetic base is pretty narrow. Some have offered pointer outcrosses as a correction for that, but would you still have a setter. I am too old and too stubborn to change now, and if that experiment is to be done, it will have to be somebody else. Best wishes.
: If you look at the Pedigrees you will see
: these dogs are line bred for generations.
: When this is done you pretty much know what
: you get. The traits do not just disappear
: unless the dog you are breeding is not
: typical. These dogs are strong bird finders
: with good noses. That is why they win. Just
: as they have been for generations. Does it
: breed on? If it did for the past 20 years
: why would it stop in one generation. With
: line bred dogs you pretty much know what you
: are getting where as when there are many
: different lines in a pedigree there is a lot
: of question to what you will get. I like to
: take my chances on something proven.
