Re: Most Important All Age Trials
You asked about the most important, not the nicest, not the prettiest, not even the best for handlers and gallery. That concept is the Free For All. 1 hour qualifying heat, three hour finals, looking for the toughest, best all age dog in the country. No prior qualifying requirement, just pay your fee, bring your dog and run. This was the first field trial I ever rode, at Sedgefields. I met Clyde Morton, who ran hounds with my Grandfather in Union County Mississippi. The FFA has fallen on hard times. You wanta make field trial history, Don Gerstner and Brent Cox, take the FFA to the ZBAR, return it to its old format, and revive a legend. The National is older, but no other field trial has contributed more to field trial lore and history than the FFA. Once a great trial, it has fallen prey to money, the many championships being run and lack of enough ground to run a 3 hour finals for big running, all age dogs that haven't been honed down to handle Ames. It should be brought back as the great test of stamina and guts it once was. My congratulations to Mr Cox for trying to keep it alive, its history deserves to be continued. I had rather win the FFA in its old format that ANY OTHER TRIAL. Many others will disagree, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it. If someone is willing and able to host the OLD FFA, they deserve to be immediately inducted into the Hall of Fame and given lifetime privileges at any field trial in the country. The prairie trials are great, the National is wonderful, the Continental is a great trial, the QCI is great in concept, the Southern is a favorite of mine, but the FFA is THE GREATEST. Mr Cox, I know I said I'd come down and run this year. I can't make it, but it is on my list and I will be there next year if I am still alive.
: What do you consider THE most important or
: prestigious trials in the AA game? If you
: are an all age amateur, which trial do you
: consider to be most important to win. What
: about major circuit all age stakes?
: I'll start out with the obvious National
: Bird Dog Championship at Ames, the National
: Amateur Quail Ch, the Quail Championship
: Invitational for Open and the Amateur
: Invitational Ch for the amateurs.
: Which others? Have some become more
: important to win while other have faded in
: importance because of grounds, birds, club
: prestige, purses, etc?
: An explanation of why you believe the
: particular trial is of great importance
: would also be helpful.
