: Excellent points Denny and ones we should all
: live by.
: This last week, The Pony Express Field Trial
: Club brought in four judges from KY, AL and
: GA to judge the Heartland All Age National
: Qualifier at Gentry, MO followed by the 33
: entry Region 17 All Age Championship. While
: many of us knew the judges from past
: travels, these guys had not looked at very
: many of these entries previously. Those are
: nearly always my favorite judges - no local
: biases in terms of having seen great or not
: so great performances in the past from the
: dog performances presented to them.
: These guys did a great job of sifting thru
: the efforts and selecting the winners.
: I have judged with Denny and found him to
: have a great grasp of the field trial game,
: bird dog performance and the stake he is
: riding and watching. Some things were no
: doubt taken out of context when some
: novices' ideas were shared on this board
: about the Midwest Shooting Dog Championship.
: Of course not everyone sees the same things
: the same way but learned and experienced
: field trialers often do see the same things
: and agree with the decisions. As someone
: else commented (Chris Gebhardt?), he talked
: to some pros and they had the stake winners
: the same way as the judges.
: Remember also it is very hard to RUN in a
: field trial and at the same time JUDGE the
: field trial. Having said that, isn't it
: interesting that two different judges from
: KY and GA used the same dog in the 33 dog
: Region 17 Amateur All Age Championship at
: Gentry, MO as Denny and his judging partner
: used at Browning, MO in the 48 entry Midwest
: Open Shooting Dog Championship? Different
: grounds, different day, different dog
: handler, different stake standard (we hope)
: and different judges used the same dog for
: those titles. Must be a good one, huh?
: We need good, honest, knowledgeable bird dog
: men and women who have spent hours in the
: field in pursuit of game birds AND hours and
: hours at field trials watching great dogs to
: judge our stakes. It helps if they have
: handled champion calibre dogs themselves;
: have broke dogs, ridden behind or along side
: other good handlers, etc. Denny Adams can
: judge my dogs anytime and I hope when he
: does, they do a job he (and I) will
Doug thank you very much for the endorsement I am probably getting to sensitive in my old age. An old -timer years ago told me only 2 people would be happy with our decision the champ an R.U. After a pause he said probably 1 because the R.U. thinks he should be champ.
