In defense of the average novice or "visitor" to field trials, it takes time to understand the difference between a championship field trial performance and a good old bird dog finding and pointing birds for his hunter. And I would also note that it takes time and experience to be able to "judge" bird dog performances properly. The two guys looking at the dogs in Region 17 AA Championship had that in spades - not to mention their ability to break dogs that win at the highest levels.
It goes back to the old adage that this sport is one where a fellow believes he knows it ALL in three years and then ten years later realizes how little he really knows!
If possible, you might access a copy of the Judging Seminar DVD produced by the NBHA of Kentucky group where Judges Jim White, Jim Crouse, John Russell and Dewey Mullins "explain" the judging of field trials and class bird dog performances. Well worth the time to watch and rewatch that DVD.
