I bought 3 grapefruits, not looking closely at the sign (if there was one--) saying they were grapefruit. I took them home and when I cut one, I found it was a ruby red grapefruit. Being the tightwad little old lady I am, I thought, well, I can't let it go to waste. I ate it. A couple of hours later, I got to shaking and shuddering and was so very cold. I was helped to bed; by that time, my ankles and knees were swelling. My grandson got me two big juice jugs filled with hot water, put them against my back and covered me. It got worse, but I kept telling them I would go to the ER if it wasn't better by Monday. (not today--last Monday.) After three days, barely getting from bed to potty, it began to wear off. I drank water like a desert crawling lizard til I flushed what I could out of my system. When I finally got better, I went online to see what the grapefruit had caused besides a gout flair-up. There is an enzyme in it that either backs up the chemicals from certain medications, to where they can't work, or tries to kick them out. It can lead to your organs shutting down, and possibly even death. I still have times when I get cold, but not to the point of shaking so hard I almost fall out of bed. Most of the leg swelling is down. (It ended up being from hips to toes...) so I'm praying it isn't some kind of permanent nerve damage. I'm getting a doctor appointment today. But it always takes a week or two to get in to see them. I can only apologize.
