I was pleased to see Patel told FBI employees to ignore Musk's stupid email to list 5 things they did last week or be fired.Workers at the departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Education and Commerce, as well as at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the National Institutes of Health and the Internal Revenue Service also were told not to respond pending further guidance. Workers at Intelligence agencies were also told not to respond.

The loonie in all this is Elon Musk.

Not sure I understand... are they being insubordinate because they are not following Musk's demands because their agency leadership told them not to?

If someone with no knowledge of your business and roles your staff fulfilled advised them to send something like this or be fired and you stepped in as the leader of the business and told them to ignore wouldn't you expect them to adhere to your direction? Wouldn't that be insubordination if they didn't follow your direction?

It only shows how unorganized and disconnected from reality this approach to downsizing jobs is.

Trump today called Musk's idea to send the email "genius". He then said he assumes if someone didn't answer the email, "they probably aren't a real person" Now we hear they are going to feed the responses into AI to determine if the positions are needed or can be cut.

There is no strategy, no consistency, Government efficiency? This is one of the most inefficient process possible.

This gigantic federal workforce increase under Biden cushioned with financial incentives needs some oversight, I would think.

100,000 new employees for just the IRS alone came marching in under Biden - surely, they can answer 5 points on how their employment has benefited the agency.

Each agency needs to evaluate their own employees not have Musky send an email, threaten to fire for non response... then.. fire people because someone, Musk I guess, feels the points listed aren't valid or worthy of continued employment.

I've worked as a contractor at corporations that have downsized and this is not the right way to do it.

Look at the people they've had to rehire, that, in and of itself proves there is no plan and no strategy. The chainsaw stunt says it all.

Many of these workers were on probationary standing. Redundancy. Is a fair reason for dismissal.

Terminations, according to experts should be private and quick, HR people do not bring a box of Kleenex.

The email you posted is one of at least 3 sent to employees, not to mention Musk's posts on X, contradictory messages from Agency Leaders, Department Heads etc.

At the Department of Homeland Security, that contradicted earlier guidance from leaders at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which are both housed within DHS.

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) staff were initially told to reply but then received a Sunday evening email asking them to "pause" responses pending additional guidance. Late Monday, a third email told employees, "There is no HHS expectation that HHS employees respond to OPM and there is no impact to your employment with the agency if you choose not to respond."

For those who chose to respond, the department advised them not to name other HHS employees they worked with, matters they are working on or specific grants or contracts. "Assume that what you write will be read by malign foreign actors and tailor your response accordingly," the email warned.

Meanwhile, agencies including the departments of the Treasury, Veterans Affairs, Commerce and Interior instructed their employees to respond, with a range of instructions on how to do so, while also reminding them not to share classified information.

They weren't "laid off", they were FIRED --- erroneously fired - not because things had "slowed down", they were rehired because Musk effed up and their jobs were critical.

Probationary in this case meant dismissal should only have been for poor performance.
