I understand and do not disagree that if you want to cut expenses cutting FTEs, jobs is needed, but not the way they are going about this. To my knowledge they are just randomly cutting numbers with no regard for what these employees are doing.

They are using crash and burn by numbers.

They could care less about the people who get fired or the programs that will be scaled back due to lack of employees.

They have already had to recall Nuclear and Bird Flu employees that they fired because of their lack of knowledge as to what their job entails..

Many more people will be effected by these reckless and random cuts.

Actions have consequences, sometimes good when done in a proper way. When it is done the way Trump and Musk are doing it, it usually ends in disaster..

I think the vast majority of MAGA have been led to believe that only 6 percent were working in an office.

I don't really care what percentage we use. These people are taking advantage of the post COVID era and probably still wear masks while driving alone in their cars.

I'll maintain that if you want to be paid, you show up, pull your load, share your ideas with co-workers, etc. And I especially feel that true of anyone earning a living off the taxpayers.

We apparently have the ability now to have "e" learning days every time the mercury takes a dip. Ahh, poor little Johnny is cold. Let's just let teachers sit home and teach. Hell, we could sell school buildings and make them homeless shelters. I mean our kids would continue to lag in reading and math skills but they, and their teachers, would be warm and cozy.

Opi - I know I can't affect your ideas of "working remote". I can only share my experiences which are vastly different from the picture you paint. In my world, if you work remote, you are held fully accountable for everything you do, you can and you do collaborate and share ideas with coworkers, most people do go into the office periodically, if required to do so. There is a lot of time lost in an office environment to texting, phone calls, smoke breaks, going to get coffee, showing up on time but not actually doing any work for the first hour. There are as many more distractions to working in an office environment.

There are times I think I would prefer to work in an office, but my company is located across the country and that would require a move. We have people nationwide working from home and the same standards apply to everyone. Get the job done or you are gone. My wife and I are both salaried and we both work more hours in a week than we would in an office environment. We are not rare, we both have a good work ethic. If an employee is someone who requires in person supervision they will fail and should be on site.

I don't think it's unfair for a company to require working in person, but I don't think it's accurate to assume people who are working remotely are unproductive.

Unfortunately, Musk and DOGE have no clue whether the people they are firing are valuable assets or not.

I think Opie, like me. is from "old school" before computers came on the scene.

Much of what was done by hand in the office is no longer necessary. Back in the day filing was done in a cabinet drawer, communication was in person or by physical memo etc,

With the technology we have available today much of that same work can be done from any location and shared. Meetings can be held on line and include as many people as needed.

It is often cost effective for employees to work from home because it saves the need for office space, office equipment etc.

I know many people who work from home and they all are hard workers.

My disabled neighbor is able to hold a job from home as she is unable to drive. She puts in way more then 40 hours per week.

I do agree that some workers need supervision, and those people should be required to be at the workplace.

See, this is a part I don't buy at all. Are you saying at home someone doesn't text, have the tv on, gets up more often for coffee or a beer? So, a stay at home to work mom tells her kids, "Sorry mommy's working, I'll play with you later"?

I would say there are many more distractions at home and if a boss allows the distractions you speak of, he needs to do a better job of staff management.

MG points out the savings on office space, utilities etc. If that company owns a building, none of that goes away. I can understand a situation like yours and Mrs. Soccer. If you have a remote office in your home while your company base is in another state, that may be negotiable.

If I would have entered that realm of thought when I was in business, I would offer my staff a two-tiered payroll system. You work at home; your pay is 90% of your working associates who come to work. Afterall, you're not buying office attire. You're not paying for gas to travel back and forth. You're not eating out at a restaurant every day. You don't need as much money. Guess how many would be home?

I think we can both be right on this one... maybe, lol. I think a lot it depends on the job requirements and the individual's work ethics. If you do it full time and have kids, you need daycare or they need to be in school. Mrs Soccer does it part time and grandma watches the little heathens (just kidding, they're great kids), we pay grandma because she needs it even though we have to force it on her.

With technology, you can almost have more effective supervision vs. in person. When Covid required a lot of work from home, managers should have been able to tell who met or exceeded their job requirements and who didn't.

Millgirl has a good point, a lot of the disconnect on this issue could be generational.

I don't mind you asking that Blu although your motivation isn't exactly subtle.

I'm salaried like many in my field so I'm not "on the clock" I get paid the same no matter how many hours it takes me to get my assignments and projects done. The downside is no overtime and I typically work more than a standard 40 hour week regularly, but I'm not complaining. I sometimes have to wait for information coming to me before I can move forward with a particular task.

Only share this to point out the best results are not always well served by the typical 9-5 schedule.

There are a lot of jobs that are done outside of the office workplace... you can be in outside sales, construction, or retired and drive for door dash.

I see, but still employers monitor employees by having a foreman or even for those who commercially drive have GPS.

Postal carriers have routes they must complete.

Door dashers have orders that must be completed.

If you are an independent contractor as many sales people have then your paid on commission.

You just reinforced my point, there are many ways employees can be held accountable outside of an office setting. People like me have deadlines and we have advanced software, project tracking software, everything imaginable to track productivity. This is 2025 not the 1980's.

Paid meal break? I can eat whenever I want, I'm not sure you understand the nature of being on salary vs hourly. Salaried jobs typically benefit the employer greatly. I can get a call or alert any day any time and it could result in an hour of work or 4 hours.

If you think keeping your computer running or a program running is sufficient you don't have much experience with today's software.

If you took the reference to 1980 as an insult, that's on you. The reference was to MIS advances.

The other way accountability is measured is the old Goals, Objectives, Strategies and Tactics. My employer is not unique in requiring employee review where you are evaluated on achieving what you and management has agreed to. Showing up to an office does not equal adequate performance.

but I do try to keep up with a changing world,,

I am sure many people working from home are as ,if not more, productive as those working in buildings..

.My experience in the work force has been people with good work ethics do not need to have a boss standing over them to be a great employee..
