Do you want the best person for the job...or do you want to limit your search only by who lives in the 62040 zip code?
I think that is one job that really doesn't matter where someone lives.
A teacher or a principal.....only as good as their ability to bring out the best in the student body.
Bring in the best person for the job. What they do with their earnings is their business, as long as their services to the district are as valuable as their salary.
Get good educators to come to town, so that people will want to live in Granite City. Good schools are always a selling point for getting people to move somewhere....and besides, more high performing graduates could someday be the best people for the job in the future.
Being that said, an incompetent teacher/administrator from out of town is also just as bad as one who lives in town.
Time .... and future metrics will tell..... and though metrics never tell the full story, they can at least give indicators in which direction things are going.
(Why am I sounding more conservative and libertarian in this post than the Opinionator?)

Dee, that’s where you just don’t get it. Hire outsiders but make it mandatory they move here. They are within their legal rights to make that part of a contract.
Supposedly the superintendent does own a small home here but doesn’t live in it.
But hey, let’s let all the big salaries move out of town while taking our tax base’s salary with them.
Look around my friend and see the dwindling number of white collar professionals in this town. Notice the correlation between that and failing schools while prominent communities leave our kids in the dust.
The top paid people in this community earn their salaries from tax dollars. School administration, police officers are moving out. If you don’t see that as an economic problem, run down to Venice and Madison and look around. The exodus of higher salaries leads to the decline of a community.
Oh and ask yourself as well how many lawyers, doctors and white collars live here. Do you know why we don’t have a men’s clothing store where you can buy a suit? Because hardly any men here ever wear a suit.
they did not fail, because they did what their country asked of them....
I agree with Dee on this...where they live has nothing to do with their ability to do the best job for the students..."the good old boys" "only if you are born and raised in GC" days are over..taxpayers and students deserve the most qualified person for the job that is how you get the best schools..the problem with Granite is most of the younger generation move out of Granite...and renters move in..this is why the lower scores on test...not because a teacher or administrator lives in another community...
Wow Millgirl, you surprise me. So children of renters are bringing down test scores? Poor kids can’t learn?
It’s not about a good old boys club which by the way hasn’t existed for years. There are many capable teachers in this district who deserve to be promoted before some new outsider who knows nothing about our community and our kids takes an important job like the high school principal.
Imagine working as a teacher in this district for fifteen or twenty years. You get to know the students and pubic. You have an inside understanding of why test scores are so low. You further your education and get the required certification to be a principal.
Then slam bam thank you ma’am, a person near retirement comes in and takes the job four years before he retires. If we are going to pad pensions let’s do it for someone who has paid their dues.
My God I sound like a liberal.
Always good to hear your views MG. they did not fail, because they did what their country asked of them....
I never said poor kids can't learn..but fact is many and transient and only attend for a few weeks or months and have parents who are much less involved in their education compared to most home owners...and I do believe you understand what I am saying...and yes, OP I always enjoy your post....
MG, you give as good as you get, and I respect that.
Let me ask you this though. There was a female candidate who is currently in one of the higher-ranking positions at the high school. She was passed over for a male from out of town with no more experience. So maybe you're right. The Good Old Boys network still exist. (Unless of course you're the superintendent with connections) Has the board recently promoted or hired any female candidates for jobs? If so, I will applaud the hiring and promotion of female candidates.
I wonder if the female candidate in this case (maybe more than one) has a case under equal rights. I'd like a piece of the settlement if that could be proven. they did not fail, because they did what their country asked of them....
Opie, I do not know if there was a female qualified employee passed over or not. As far as proving that a minority (female etc) was passed over based of gender or race that would be wrong in any case...proving that is the reason for making the choice of a white male is not an easy thing to do...discrimination is always subjective as are qualification is also....
Damn, I can see where everyone is coming from on this one. The residents of Granite City do often give the impression that they feel they are looked down upon by other cities in the area, mainly Edwardsville and Glen Carbon. Hiring an outsider for the Principal's post may well work out, but I'm not sure it was the right decision. They probably could have brought in any number of qualified people, but they chose to select an outsider. Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side, but sometimes it isn't.Covid fizzled out, unleash the smoke.
