Most people under the age of 30 will not relate to.

I was thinking about this earlier, younger people will never understand the lack of photographs pre-cell phone days. People didn't carry around a camera unless it was a special occasion.

Film was expensive so you didn't waste it, it was used sparingly. Also, the expense of having the film developed, and it seemed to take an eternity waiting for it. There was no such thing as instant gratification after clicking that shutter either, you had to wait to open that packet of developed film to realize you spoiled half your shots forgetting to turn the flash on, or having your finger in the picture!

Videos or home-made movies, don't get me started on the bulky monstrosity we had to balance on our shoulders (strap and all) a good 3 or 4 pounds of video camera, where the zoom feature was our best friend.

The struggles were real.

My grandma in Iowa had some good stories from the party lines up there. I have an old phone from that era, I need to restore it and hang it up in our spare bedroom with the 150-175 year old brass bed. Thanks for reminding me!

Sidewalk sales were an event back in the day for sure. Moonlight Madness sales downtown. They blocked off the street traffic and we walked the entire downtown area.

Stopping off for a bite to eat at the lunch counter at Woolworths, the place was always packed and you almost always had to wait for a place to sit.

I still miss our drive in the Bel Air. Great memories there for sure. You needed to be up to date on your Tetanus shot to use the bathrooms, but what fun it was! I remember being there one time when train cars derailed late one evening in the middle of the movie, it lit up the night time sky like daylight the fireball was so big.

My grandma had a party line, and when the phone would ring she would say it's not for us. Apparently each address had it's own unique ring.

I remember thinking it was high tech and a big deal to get the extra long cord to be able to lug around the old rotary phone, instead of it having it attached to the wall.

I remember at the age of 6 and 7 years old walking to what we called back then, Buxton's candy store off of St Clair avenue. A few of us from the neighborhood would get together and walk all the way there with a dime in our pocket, from Wilson school.

I also remember a corner confectionary near Webster school called Ezelle's (forgive the spelling) it's been many years ago. I still remember the wood planked floor and the huge candy counter. Our mom may send us there for a loaf of bread and a pound of bologna, or even to pick them up a pack of cigarettes, no questions about age asked, it was of no concern of the store owner.

If we had any change coming, we would walk out with a sack of penny candy.

Those corner markets back then carried anything and everything they could pack in them. Fresh vegetables and meats, canned goods to baked goods, to hardware and motor oil. I can also remember a place called Emmett's (spelling again, sorry), the place was on Edwards street off of Nameoki road, where no cash was no problem, many of the neighborhood families had a charge account there they would settle up every pay day, or at the end of the month.

Can you imagine walking into Schnucks and walking up to the cashier with a cart full of groceries and saying, put it on my account and just walking out the door? Ahhhh the good ole days.

Our neighborhood confectionary had a gumball machine that had some speckled balls in it. If you got one of them, you traded it for a prize. The man who ran the place used to shake the machine for us until one of the speckled balls was next to come out.

Bob: if you want to talk auto then, Putting snow tires on with or without studs about November and taking them off around March every year. Non-radial tires, bumper jack, Round headlamps. Getting new license plates by Feb 15th every year just when you got your old number memorized and I am not talking just the sticker.6 cyl plates cost $18.00 and V-8 plates cost $30.0 not like today where everything is $150.00 for plates

Earl's sporting goods, or shopping at Grant's department store and eating at the Bradford house. Shopping in downtown St Louis and never worrying about making it back and forth to your car with packages.

Riding the elevator, pre-escalator days, to each department, clothing on one floor, toys and furnishings on another. A restaurant and candy counter in every store. I still remember the window displays around the holidays.

Oh gee, you're going way back. The window displays at Christmas. We'd walk around the block and look at them. Some of them had a big circle on the window and when you put your hand on it, you'd put the train set in motion. There used to also be an elevator operator. One time he let me pull the lever to make the elevator stop at the floor. (I was just a kid, so I think somehow he still had control, but I thought I really did something). This thread is getting even more fun.

We didn't have our milk delivered, but the Jewel Tea man came to our house with his products. We got our milk in glass bottles from the Farm Fresh store on Nameoki Rd. when it was only drive-thru. A man named Otis ran it and I think he knew everyone by name who came through.

I think Otis had the one on Pontoon and Johnson, Bud Clay had the one across from St. John’s and then later on he opened the one further down on Nameoki Rd and also the one in Madison at 3rd and Madison Ave when that was built. He also had one down in Carbondale I’ll. I am not totally sure what Bud’ s real first name was though.

Who remembers the Dog N Suds on Pontoon road? Later to re-open as Ervay's Restaurant.

Also there was a restaurant right before you cross over the bridge off route 3, I think it may have been called the Canal restaurant or something like that. I know they often had buffet style dinners and lunches.

Who here ever spent the day at Sun and Fun or Fun and Sun....not sure what came first in the name. I can remember hot footin it across that scorching sand to the water. The place was often packed.

I thought in the beginning, Otis ran the only Farm Fresh, which was the drive-thru on Nameoki Rd. across from St. John's. Otis may have later built the one on Pontoon and Johnson. Of course, I'm going by my memory, and you know what they say.

Speaking Out: You are correct on All, Dog N Studs did become Ervay's both was owned by Dick Ervay. Canal restaurant and motel was to the west of the intersection of Rt 3 & West Chain of Rocks Rd And across the street from that you had Skelly's truck stop + if you was to go to the East of the intersection and cross over the rail road track across the street from Sun & Fun you had 15 acres restaurant.

opinionated. I am pretty sure it was called The Farmers Market it was in the old Sinclair gas station where The Park Rest is in now. I also remember the one on 162 after you crossed the tracks.

The CITY Theater was located near the middle of the 1900 block of State st.

They seemed to show B Rated movies.

After the CITY closed a Church took it over.

Washington Theater - on Saturdays or Sundays during the summer they would show ten 10 Cartoons along with a Western and a Serial i.e. Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Super Man.

And the new models were a big secret until the day they were introduced to everyone. I remember when Bonanza was going to show the viewers the new 1964 Chevrolets. I watched that whole program, and at the end, here they came. The screen was completely black and you only seen several cars with their headlights shining right into the camera. That's all you saw was the headlights.

I can also remember when the new models came out it was a big deal to drive around and look at all of them! Then you would ask everyone if they had seen them yet and you could tell what year they was by looking at them also

I don’t remember that one, and Maddox Chrysler was located at the edge of town on Nameoki Rd just as you wen around the curve past Pontoon Rd, were the use car lot is current.

Not sure about that Bob, but I remember the Brewer motors AMC or Rambler which ever you want to call them at 22nd and Madison were Taco Bell and Jack in the box sits now.

dealership located at Madison ave and Niedringhaus.

We also had a Granite City Chrysler Plymouth on 19th street. That building is still there.

We had Woodrome Oldsmobile, Hudley Pontiac and Granite City Dodge on Madison Avenue as well.

I also remember, and this goes way back, and American Motors Dealer, Home of the Matador on Madison Avenue. I think it was down farther toward Barney's Tire.

Now we're down to two dealerships owned by the same company.

Opinionated you are so correct and we started talking about them all yesterday! It is just truly amazing how the automobile industry has changed since the 80’s and 90’s . No more Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Plymouth, AMC ,Mercury etc not counting the models that they have stopped making as well!

Same thing could be said about the bakeries in town. Off hand, I can think of Siebold's (of course) in a couple of locations around town, Ozzie's, Frenchie's, Black's, and Mr. Donut. I'm sure there were more. I believe there was a good bakery on Madison Ave. in Madison, but I can't come up with the name of it.

The Chrysler/Plymouth dealer (I think it was Elledge) which was located at the SW corner of 19th st & Grand ave. across from Western Auto which also sold fire arms at that time...mainly for hunting sportsman etc.

I think they had Ralphie's 'Red Ryder Carbine with Compass in the Stock'

Barney's Drive In.

One of the places I really miss was across from the GC High School called BARNEY's drive in.

Barney's had ice cold Root Beer served in an ice cold frosty mug.

My favorite was the 'Elephant Ear Sandwich' or as they are called today a Tenderloin Sandwich.

Sometime in the mid 60's the owner of the property did not renew Barney's Lease.

I think a 'NATIONAL FOODs' store built on the property and later moved to another location in Granite.

In the meantime Schnuck's bought the property and built a grocery store.

Sleuth: You are close on that, National Food went out of business or Schnuck's bought them out and then moved from were Big Lots was and Ruler Foods is now to that location on Madison Ave. They have rebuilt the store & expanded a couple of times I think because it use to sit a lot closer to Nameoki Rd than it does now. Seems like Red Barn use to sit about were their loading docks are located???

Ozzie's Bakery was at the SE corner of E. 24th St. and Nameoki Rd. Caddy corner from Roderick's Tavern and a block and a half from the Evergreens.

There was NASH - RAMBLER - AMC dealership
in the 2100 or 2200 block of Madison ave.

The dealership name I remember was BREWER.

Google search Nash Automobile - many photos are laughable (bathtub)

When traveling down Madison ave I miss the R&J TEXACO gas station sign in the 2200 block of Madison Ave
