I'm not sure what you mean about school system failing kids. My kids did very well there. Both went on to major universities. I guess maybe you judge it on your kids. Were they slow? Special Ed? Did they drop out?

Yep, my kids did well. My wife and I did well and made a great deal of money in our careers. If that's failing, I'm good with it.

I have to agree with Opie, Rivebender. There's still a lot of successful kids coming out of the schools. For those who aren't doing well, maybe it's the parents failing them instead of the schools, but that's another whole thread.

Thank you Bob. Hey I understand the plight of a guy who doesn't know the difference between "your" and "you're".

I mean it's much easier to blame a teacher and a school than it is to blame a parent or the student for not accepting personal responsibility.

It's what our society does these days. Easy way out so to speak. The funny thing is though they can't explain the kids who are successful. They can't tell me why the same teacher who helps the kid get to college, cant reach the kid whose mom and dad either don't care or are too lazy to help their kid.

I was just commenting from what I personally observed. I don't know all parents, but being involved with the school activities when my kids were going, I've met other parents. I don't think any parent who was involved had a student who did poorly.

So true Opie. I have said for years and feel it’s still true. You can get whatever education you want out of Granite City Schools. My Senior year, I received college credit for my calculus, English, Econ A and science classes. I didn’t use that completely to my advantage, but it was there for the ones that did.

Now they have even more avenues where a student can graduate with their associates degree at the same time as their HS diploma, that is awesome, imho

Im sure we can find a half a dozen kids that attended East Side that are geniuses just like those of you on here that went to GC. Having said that i dont think GC kids are any smarter, or any dumber than kids that have attended most any other High School with similar demographics.

I think you can find examples in any and all schools that override the norm. Is that the new standard, if we can find good students in any school it doesnt matter how many others are not thriving? Im just asking, if that is the standard, its good enough for me.

My kids have the same teachers as yours My kids get backing at home. Education is stressed.

Your kids? Who knows? I bet they know all the brands of beer sold at the local tavern which in itself is learning. Yet they fail in the same system as kids who excel. Explain it.

Answer the question. The answer is simple so I'll help you. Intelligence is comprised of genetics, environment and the willingness and ability to grasp techniques. Some kids simply can't keep up and thank God we don't just pander to those kids while ignoring those who will go on to do great things.

And Wally, we've always judged schools by individual performance as opposed to standardized testing.

Nothing shows up a lib in hiding when they resort to their usual tactics of straw man attacks followed by insults adding flavor to the reality that this poster is into TIFs for it.
Just think that TIF money should have gone to the schools but we all know how that works.

We dont judge schools by standardized testing? Ok, if you say so. But why even bother to give the tests and test results if they dont matter? Screw the testing, we can use the money saved to put towards the fund to re elect JB.

No Wally, we can use the money spent on wasted tests for things like computers, vocational training. You know, the things that will benefit a young person in the job market.

where there was a study done on the schools and the respondents reported they thought Illinois schools are under performing and wasteful of funding except when it came to their home town districts.
Funny how that is.

the quality of the education our students is one thing, and how it effects our town is another all together.
If we turn out 20 percent bright kids, and all the others are duds, i guess we will have to live with it?
With the internet today our schools are given a rating. ive said this before, a friend had a very nice home here at a good price and couldnt sell it. he kept lowering the price and then he asked his realtor what the problem was and she answered him as follows
"ive had quite a few young families look at the home and love it, but they look at the school ratings and say that they want their children to have a better oportuninty"
The home owner finally just rented the home out. And I might add ive had many conversations re this with our educators, and they say "but the top ten percent of our kids do very well"
I dont know the answer, but I would like our town to do better because it effects everyones bottom line.

why hire teachers?

Something to add to this is a few generations back many of the immigrant parents simply could not teach their children from lack of ability and the demands of extended hourly factory work. The teachers taught the kids then so why can't they now?

Look at it this way, the top ten percent who are geniuses get the hest jobs, but its not as though the others cant also succeed. If you can get C's and coast through school you can do just fine in the real world.

A superintendent of several Belleville schools once told me that some teachers and admins arent crazy about the testing because when things go south it reflects on them. Sounded really feasible, but since we have these examples of Opies genius family im not so sure now. I say we let this one go River.

It has no idea if I have children or not...just another straw man to set up and knock down. One of the past posts it was bragging about my inabilities to invest properly and when considering it has no knowledge of my financial status that too is just another straw man. Now consider if a person was a cracker jack A+ student in school why would they use straw man arguments that are so easily seen through?
Oh well it may have posted more I don't know and won't waste my time on its posts of straw men , ad hominems and other assorted logical fallacies...I can go to the Yahoo message boards and get more bettered crafted attacks there; its are too easy and I don't need all the humor this time of the morning.

But let's not offer up an explanation why Teacher A has successful students and unsuccessful students. I mean does she give the smart kids the answers? I havent really trashed the school system, but i guess i also havent not trashed it either. There is enough of a job market currently Opie that not everyone has to be Mensa material like you and everyone in your brilliant family. The ones that continue to talk about Granite Cities school district are derelict in their duties because they continue to miss the most important point and that is that you and your kids did well in GC schools. What the other hundreds of students have or have not achieved is not at all relevant. You have exceeded all expectations in pointing this out, so as far as im concerned we can go to the next topic.

As I've always said, any job a man does makes him a good man. I just understand that a person with mechanic skills can't be a surgeon.
