Personally, I think anyone using FOIA to request information should have to state the reason for the request, otherwise FOIA could just be a means to harass a public official. I know as it stands, you don't need a reason.

bob, i thought an FOIA request could be denied in some circumstances, or the situation you described would be never ending. jeremey the lawyer surely knows.

You don't have to have a reason. It would lead to governments saying your reason isn't good enough and denying public records. It would let government employees pick and choose who can have what, information that belongs to the public at large. There are limited exceptions to what can be denied. Any citizen, resident of an area or not, needs to be able to look into all facets of what their government is doing. It's how nothing at all can be found out, or it can lead to crimes. Take Bell, California, where it was they mayor I believe was getting paid as much as the POTUS, found out through records requests. There are measures in place for voluminous or over burdening requests. But why should someone have to have a reason to get the information that belongs to them in the first place?

You don't have to be a lawyer to know how to read the law or relevant case law. Ignorance of the law is no excuse when you break it, so why do people always resort to calling someone an internet lawyer? The laws are available to read on the internet. If you had to be a lawyer to know or understand the law, then not being a lawyer would be an absolute defense to breaking the law.

Public officials work for we the people...and are accountable to we the people. Nobody should be asking “pretty please” for a FOIA request.

I'm not saying that you should have to beg for the information, just state a reason for wanting it, but I see Jeremy's point about the official saying your reason isn't good enough. I was just looking at the official being hindered with their duties by being ridiculously overburdened by someone with a nit to pick with them.

Being given 10 years to have something done seems quite generous to me.

Here is the ENTIRE SITUATION SUMMED UP:

EMOTIONS OR EGO(however one sees themselves) GETS IN THE WAY.

Here is THE PROBLEM WITH OVERACTIVE EMOTIONS SUMMED UP:

FILING FALSE CLAIMS AND CALLING THE POLICE, CAN GET AN INNOCENT PERSON OR MAYBE A BUS LOAD OF INNOCENT PEOPLE KILLED.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE THEN?

IF I WERE A POLICE OFFICER AND I GET A CALL AND I AM ONLY TOLD ONE SIDE OF A STORY THEN
I HOPE THAT I'M NOT BEING LIED TO. I TURN ON MY SIREN AND I GO AS FAST AS I DEEM NEEDED YET TRY TO KEEP MYSELF AND OTHERS OUT OF HARMS WAY.

IF IM LIED TO AND IM THINKING THE WORSE CASE SCENARIO, I HOPE I CAN GET THERE TO PREVENT THE UNGODLY FROM HAPPENING AND PERHAPS I PICK UP SPEED BUT THAT BUS DRIVER DIDN'T HEAR MY SIREN.....

WHAT COMES OUT OF YOUR MOUTH CAN HAVE DEVESTATING CONSEQUENCES WHETHER YOU MEANT IT TO HAPPEN OR NOT.

If I were a life coach, step one in my epic tome of instruction would be: try not to be an a$$hole. Your life will be much easier if you don’t choose to paint yourself into that corner.

Sure, you can be an a$$hole. It’s your choice. Like going to a Jimmy Buffett concert. Those things are chocked full of a$$holes. They choose to do it.

Dave, i kind of agree with Palin, and have said several times that jeremy may have some valid points. You have to admit that the messenger and his creepy alter ego granny couldnt be any more annoying. Very few people have defended the GC politicians in recent weeks on a variety of topics but jeremy probably isnt the best spoke person.

Because the city has now put themselves in a position where they could be sued and you the taxpayers will foot the bill when he wins, don't take it out on me or anyone else. You can almost tell who may be a dirty cop or relative of said dirty cop or city liar by what is written.

Very true David. And a black man can call another black man by the "n" word. It's part of a brotherhood.

Citizens who refer to the police as Pigs, killers and other vile names are typically on the wrong side of the law or have a relative that is.

There are a few bad cops out there. There are a few bad lawyers, teachers, truck drivers, etc... It doesn't give license to put the whole group down.

Dave, what that cop did was 100% total BS, but that story got a ton of coverage because it was a dumb ass cop that did it. Had the cop not lied about what happened that story is a one liner on page 17 X. My guess is the cop was tired of the double standards, but he probably doesnt need to be in that profession. Look at what cops deal with in NY City and the mayor doesnt even take the side of law enforcement.
