There are just some jobs where you want the best people for the job. It's a pity that someone extracts a salary from District 9, but puts it into District 7... ultimately that would be better if there was some kind of return.....but there is a return if that teacher is the best qualified to teach the children of District 9.. I think there's a fine line.... For example, I highly respect the fire fighters and street workers...and those positions require skill...but there are enough people in Granite City to choose from. However, an economic development director is a much higher stakes position. Sometimes the best person for the job may live elsewhere, but if they produce results, the city will benefit. There are just certain types of skills where it is necessary to leave town and find someone to raise the bar. I know I"ll catch hell to say that people in GC aren't intelligent....and I don't believe that at all. Like I say, the Fire and Street depts should not hire dumbasses....but there are some very competent people within the City to cover those vital services... There are many in GC that I would trust with my life and limb. However, when it comes to negotiations and business dealings, why would we limit our search within a pool of 28,000 or so people....many of whom aren't degreed, but some who are? I am sorry, but based on past observable data, without being mean or insulting, methinks place of residence should be the LAST consideration for this role. No, this is not a job that requires intimate knowledge of Granite City....it requires ability to sell Granite City to the world. I say get the very best person in the world GC can afford!
