So, I see that several people responded to my question about who got the position for economic developer. Many said they agreed that it’s okay to have an independent contractor instead of a city official because it would allow for more candidates to be chosen from that didn’t live in GC. You’ve got it all wrong people. The requirement was to be a resident within 90 days, you could live anywhere in the United States and apply for this position. It’s a terrible disservice to hire anyone that doesn’t live here and has no vested interest in our community. It creates a job farm attitude, that GC pays its employees high wages, and not required to live here. The minute teachers and police officers were allowed to do that, our town started going down hill. You need the pillars of our community to live here, work here and spend there money here. Besides the mill, these are our highest paid workers. Without the demand for higher quality stores, and restaurants and nice homes from the higher paid people, the demand is gone. We will never have the ability to grow. The economic developer can’t change who is required to live here such as teachers etc. to help build up our community again, if you yourself have no interest in living here. Paying her more than the last person holding this position, doesn’t mean the job will be done better. I’m so disappointed. By the way, there are plenty of qualified people that live here that could have filled that position, and that have the drive, vested interest, and love our town to put much effort in seeing it prosper and go back to what it used to be.
