You were there too, WUS?! I should have been paying closer attention!!! Let me summarize the 2 hour meeting with my take... Conflicting stories under oath. Wow. It would be more entertaining if their pants would actually catch fire... An objecting candidate being accused of using white-out on an opponents petition and fabricating an objection. (oops, someone maybe forgot to have some things notarized before turning them in), because the requested copies obtained by the opposing candidate later that morning had NO notary stamp, but the stamp showed up later in subsequent copies--dated the 8th (on the 16th). Helen backed up the objection, but said the papers turned up notarized the next time she looked at them...The attorney actually accused the other candidate, when Randy's petition was challenged, of lying, tampering with elections and creating a fraudulent objection by using whiteout. Nice. Can't make this stuff up. They were really hard on Helen, she's getting old and really should get more respect from them. Instead, they are baiting her to look inept. It's ugly, and wrong. Trying to tell Helen that security for the election documents is her responsibility when her Deputy Clerk (Also the notary in question) has the same access (but not the same political loyalties).... Objections about who signed what and for whom, and if anyone had deceitful intent according to the law...And, if so, the other candidate runs unopposed....Yeah, that's democracy.... An objector who can apparently access private township documents on a holiday weekend without using FOIA requests...It helps to have low friends in high places... Objections that one of the candidates filed too many signatures--it was fun to watch Terry school Randy on the law...I don't think Randy does much reading on that sort of stuff... Randy's daughter, the office manager, testifying under oath that she's a staunch supporter of her dad. Of course she is. I believe she'd probably do anything for him--and her cushy job with all the benefits..... Tammy Hanfelder is objecting about Elaine Beckland (again) for assessor. There was a lost petition page that has now been found, but there will be an objection hearing on Thursday evening, anyway. We all remember last election when Tammy had the incumbent, Elaine, thrown off the ballot and she ran as a write in. Tammy figures if those tactics worked last time, it's a lot easier to win that way....Even easier if she can run unopposed. And listening to that blow-hard attorney who I KNOW PERSONALLY is no paragon of virtue or justice. He and his client were truly a pair of liars together plotting against my husband and I several years ago, but maybe that was just us and those two tell the truth to and about everybody else the rest of the time....Yeah, of course they do.... Candidates trying anything to get their opponents thrown off of the ballot on a perceived technicality, rather than running on their own merit, honor and convictions.... And when Randy's own petition was challenged with good evidence, they denied, covered butts, accused the other candidate of lying, tampering with elections and creating a fraudulent objection by using whiteout. Maybe they should call someone higher up if they truly believe that. And, they are also trying to throw Helen under the bus for not pressing charges on that Notary for what she purportedly did. An official investigation is probably needed, but there isn't a person on that board who will conduct an an honest, professional investigation... The purpose of the election board, in my opinion, is not to wipe the ballot down to one, unopposed candidate for each office. Or to protect the jobs or interests of certain people or political parties. But, we'll see what happens. After all, this IS Nameoki Township politics-as-usual... They all went in to the back room with no decisions being returned tonight. Saga to be continued Thursday night (until election day in April). Yep, the circus is back in town.
