EDWARDSVILLE – Madison County Treasurer Kurt Prenzler pledges to move Madison County towards a “No Kill” animal shelter and if elected will set up a committee of veterinarians, animal activists and animal control professionals to determine how to do it.
Prenzler, who is a dog owner and running for county chairman, feels that the public is ready for animal control to explore new options other than euthanasia for lost family pets.
“For 35 years, my opponent’s only answer to animal control as a member of the county board is euthanasia,” Prenzler said. “I think public attitudes have changed on this issue in those four decades he has been in office, even though his hasn’t. I do believe some dangerous and sick animals will have to be put down, but certainly that should not be the universal solution to the problem.”
Prenzler is encouraged that the county is now willing to post on the internet pictures of animals in the county’s possession, but thinks this change is long overdue.
“The internet is over 20 years old and we are just now posting pictures of lost pets?” Prenzler said. “I think we could use some new ideas in county leadership and a fresh perspective. Think of how many pets might still be with their families if he made that change, say ten years ago?”
Prenzler believes any changes to animal control will need to be done with his accountant’s perspective on cost, such as finding households willing to foster a pet for a period of time or before it is adopted. He feels the changes that are being made are necessary and will benefit the county. At a minimum, he wants to extend the mandatory wait time from 3 to 5 business days to ten business days.
“I know how devastating it would be to my family if we lost our dog and discovered it had been euthanized,” Prenzler said. ”The truth is that during the four decades Dunstan has been on the county board that reality has happened to thousands of families. It’s a shame, and we can work to change it.”
