Shag, some homes are foreclosed on due to many factors other than taxes. People over commit to debt. Families split and quite frankly some people just don't live up to their responsibilities. Art and music curriculum can come from the community? Really? Who's going to teach it for free? The extracurricular program cuts probably save more than you think. Coaching stipends, uniform and equipment cost, transportation? These things probably add up to near a million. Even though band students pay for their trips the board still employees the teachers who instruct those kids. If there are three band teachers, one at each level, that in itself would save almost $200,000. I also learned today that the district has not asked for a tax "increase" in over two decades. They did seek a bond issue when the high school was rebuilt and again under Dr. Briggs a few years ago. Bond issues are target specific and time specific unlike a tax increase.
