Yep. Lafayette Square was hit by a tornado in 1896. After that the wealthy began to move out and built west, in what is now the Central West End, the wealthiest of the wealthy building the private streets there (but I suspect the private street people were from Vandeventer Place...which no longer exists). Architectural styles and tastes had changed and the wealthy sought to "update". Lafayette Square became less and less desirable and property values declined and kept going down. Many of the mansions were then turned into boarding houses, divided into small apartments and rooms. The earliest I remember going through Lafayette Square was 1964/65. I was a teenager and I remember thinking how beautiful the architecture was and what a shame that it would probably soon be torn down. Here's an interesting clip. At about 3:45 begins the story of Ruth Kamphoffner(sp?) in an interview, who was one of the first to purchase and rehab a house in LS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djhPxNiL_Dk
