I, too, live in the neighborhood and am extremely concerned about the decline of Maryland Manor Apartments and its effect on the surrounding neighborhood. We pay a great deal of taxes for our property and am very disappointed about the decline. I wrote some time ago about the residents of the apartments not curbing their dogs and allowing them to use the island on Wabash Avenue without cleaning their mess. And regardless of what Dr. Langston's friends say, the police do spend much time in the complex. They admit that crime in this area has risen sharply since the decline of the apartment tenants. Children are unsupervised and the place just looks trashy. I understand that someone from out of town owns the complex and has a resident manager. Personally, I don't think the manager does a very good job of managing the place. It is a mess from the outside. I can only imagine what the inside is like. I do understand that it is now Sect. 8 housing. And no matter, the property should be made to be kept up to a certain standard before it deteriorates any more. When they were first built, there were restrictions about window coverings--all facing out had to be white. White curtain, drapes, shades, and blinds. It looked very nice, but hasn't looked like that for some time. I do understand that Dr. Strotheide was not good about the upkeep on the apartments themselves, allowing structural problems to go unrepaired and letting the decline continue. How sad. How sad for the neighbors as well.
