After Mel Carnahan (the former Democrat governor of Missouri) died in a plane crash in October 2000 while running for the U.S. Senate, he won the election posthumously.

Following his victory, his widow, Jean Carnahan, was appointed by the acting governor to fill the vacant Senate seat. I would be willing to bet Sunny Hostin and Joy Beho were fine with it.
