That word is a perfect example of a derogatory term that used to be acceptable and I think widely used. I was in a group of guys where someone told a joke and it included "retarded" as well as a sort of impression. Everyone was laughing and I remember one teammate getting very red in the face and he simply walked away. I learned later he had a little brother with Down Syndrome.
