Everyone is free to post, everyone is free to question it, including asking for a source.

No one is under any obligation to share the source, but it calls into question the validity... especially when they "read it in an article" and in the next breath "a friend who lives in Indiana told me"

You say "find the source yourself" -- I typically do seek out the source and when I can't find it I ask.

There's a big difference in posting something as fact vs. posting your personal opinion on something.
