Maybe I wasn't as clear as I could be... part of what I'm saying is that part of the reason he didn't back off right after the debate, is that he is not thinking clearly. Despite the response to his performance, if his thinking is clouded and he thought he could still beat Trump easily, yes, it was ego, an ego affected by old age and memory issues.
