Apparently, Dr. Cann told staff yesterday morning that she would be with them the next three years. Congratulations to her.
Now here's the rub. Closed session meetings are held to conduct items of business that are protected under confidentiality rules and regulations as set forth by state laws. It is perfectly legal and proper for the school board to discuss Dr. Cann's contract behind closed doors despite what some social media law school graduates thought.
HOWEVER, no action on items in those closed sessions is official until a public vote is taken at an open meeting of a government agency. In other words, either Dr. Cann, or more than likely one of the board members violated the rules of closed session confidentiality and that is where they she made a big mistake announcing her appointment.
Other board members should be upset that this information was not only leaked but shared with school staff before the announcement was official.
According to our golf partner, there were two votes against the extension of the contract and one abstention due to Dr. Cann being a family member. So, she is retained on a 4-2 vote with one abstention. The newly appointed board member should have abstained based on her insufficient amount time on the board to weigh in on an evaluation of staff.
In more important news, I shot a 76 this morning and won the weekly pool of $160. Mrs. O. will be enjoying dinner at Bela Malano tonight courtesy of my great performance.
they did not fail, because they did what their country asked of them....
