But with a new question --- Who WOULD HAVE done it better? Who chose to run?
I realize with the prior named Mayor, he made it through a long list of candidates in his first term. However, the latter named candidate did not have as much competition.
Further, I would kind of echo what Opinionated stated.
I think Selph and Hagnauer did what they could, long after it was too late. What about the Mayors before them?
In the 70s and 80s, they just didn't see it until later in the 80's a number of opportunities had passed Granite City and region by.
Basically - the mill provided not just for the families, but for the tax base of Granite City as well. There seemed to be little thought into perhaps diversifying the economy of the area. To this day, it relies on manufacturing.
Also too, what would Granite City look like today if mayors better than Selph and Ed led us through the late 90s and early 2000's? SOmething tells me not very much...
Now if we had some forward thinking mayors in the 60's, 70's and 80's ---- then it may be much different....
But who's to say....
The majority of the housing stock was built for working families. I just don't see the remaining apartments downtown being gentrified into yuppie pads. And when Matt and Jenn finally get a real job, they don't want to share their bathroom with Kaitlyn and Sebastian... No, they want that master bath with his and her sinks and separate baths for the kids.... In Granite City, not going to find too many houses like that.
GC is also surrounded by poverty.... it's not like the prosperity of the city of St. Louis will spread to Granite City ... and people will buy up lots in Granite City and East St. Louis just to be close to downtown ST. Louis and to be near the action.
Now in less backward metro areas, areas near the downtown core of the major city will prosper.
St. Louis is not there....the metro is still sprawling outward away from the core.
So I personally think that though Granite City continues its decline, it's remarkable that it still has a stability about it.
But since that's not good enough.....what would you have liked to see done differently?
When you ban books before you ban guns, you've admitted that you're more afraid of children learning than you are of children dying.
