Very well said. The purpose of teaching is to share information and allow the student to differentiate between their beliefs and that of educator.
Parents used to be a big part of that. Not so much now.
Interpretation of history, foreign policy, and items in the news are all up for opinion as to the effect. A teacher can tell a student that the civil war was wrong. However, that should plant the seed for the student to do his or her own fact finding and establish their position.
Even science and math while absolute, have an open window of how to determine an answer. A student reads that the earth was created when a star exploded millions of years ago. A student raised in a biblical home may not agree with the scientific reasoning. The mission is to initiate thought.
Four times four will always equal sixteen but John might need to add 4+4+4+4= 16 while Jenny just multiplies. They both should get the same answer. The path need not be the same.
It's funny to read the post by people that say schools are indoctrination centers while allowing their own kids to be on the internet four hours a night.
How many doctor and lawyers have gotten their degree from Facebook University? Oh if we only had the internet before I invested eight years in college. To think I could settle million dollar law suits or cure diseases by simply reading articles on the web.
No, while public education isn't perfect and while there is definitely a liberal influence, if adults aren't helping steer their children, then don't gripe when schools do. Schools have our kids for about six hours a day. We have them eighteen. Who has more influence?
they did not fail, because they did what their country asked of them....
